    Job Description:

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Research Associate/Fellow to work with our lithium-sulfur battery team as part of the Faraday Institution LiStar project. Candidates must have (or almost completed) a PhD in physical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, electrochemistry, materials chemistry, or a related discipline. The candidate will work within the Nottingham Applied Materials and Interfaces Group at the University of Nottingham, reporting to Dr Lee Johnson, Dr Graham Newton, and Dr Darren Walsh. The lithium-sulfur battery is very promising for our future energy-storage requirements, as it has the potential to exceed the specific energy of the lithium-ion battery. However, the performance of the battery is limited due to incomplete conversion of sulfur and low-rate capability. The project will focus on the development of electrolytes and additives that enable high performance. We encourage applicants with a range of skill sets to apply.

The Faraday Institution is the UK’s independent institute for electrochemical energy storage science and technology, supporting research, training, and analysis. We bring together scientists and industry partners on research projects to reduce battery cost, weight, and volume; to improve performance and reliability; and to develop whole-life strategies from mining to recycling to second use. https://faraday.ac.uk/

LiSTAR, Lithium-Sulfur Technology Accelerator The University of Nottingham will work alongside five other university partners and seven industrial partners to enable rapid improvements in Li-S technologies by generating new knowledge, materials and engineering solutions, thanks to its dual focus on fundamental research at material and cell level, and an improved approach to system engineering.

This is a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed-term post available to start straight away, and is available until the 1st December 2026 with possibility of further extension.

The School values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity. The School of Chemistry holds a Silver Athena SWAN Award in recognition of our commitment to advancing women's careers in science. You can read more about what this means at http://www.athenaswan.org.uk/ and on our website http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/chemistry/about/athena-swan.aspx

Please contact Lee Johnson [email protected] if you have further questions about this role. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
