Job Description:
The Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Classics (Latin-focussed).
We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. We are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values, and we want to continue to tackle the issues faced by underrepresented groups in Classics and Archaeology. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference in this regard, and we are particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in the field.
Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. The application form has criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or cover letter.
Your role as a Teaching Associate will be varied and challenging and you will be able to demonstrate a strong teaching ability in classics. You will be responsible for convening and teaching on undergraduate modules on Greek and Roman Myth, Global Reception and Ancient Literature, in addition to teaching Beginner’s Latin. You will also be supervising undergraduate and taught postgraduate dissertations. You may also contribute to undergraduate teaching on broader first year introductory modules where appropriate.
You must have a PhD already awarded in a relevant subject area or to be awarded by time of appointment and show evidence of ability to teach in the areas outlined above.
The well-being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. You will have the ability to collaborate effectively with others to work accurately under pressure, whilst prioritising your own work activities in response to differing needs and demands.
This is a part-time 29 hours per week, fixed-term post commencing 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2027.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Hannah O’Regan, Head of Department, email: [email protected]; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
