The University of Southampton is a research‑intensive University with annual research income in excess of £140 million. The Research Ethics and Governance Office (REGO), based within Research & Innovation Services (RIS), provides core support for research ethics across the University and delivers advice and guidance to researchers on all aspects of clinical research governance and wider research regulatory compliance.

    About the role

We are seeking to appoint a Research Ethics and Governance Officer to join the Research Ethics and Governance Office (REGO). In this role you will support Faculty Research Ethics Committee in the development of ethics‑related policies, training and information resources. You will also undertake governance reviews of research applications submitted by staff and students via the Ethics and Governance Online system (ERGO II), ensuring that projects comply with University policies and guidelines and, where applicable, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

A central aspect of the role will involve overseeing a diverse portfolio of clinical research and clinical trials, including medical devices, human challenge studies and clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs). You will work across a wide range of research activities, from studies exploring new treatments for serious and terminal illnesses through to behavioural and psychological research.

By supporting projects throughout their full lifecycle, you will provide ongoing, practical advice to researchers.

    About you

    You will bring:

    • A high level of initiative, a genuine interest in building your career in research ethics and governance, and a collaborative approach to working within a busy team.
    • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
    • An enthusiasm for working in a dynamic environment, alongside strong planning and problem‑solving skills.
    • A good understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and some experience/knowledge of clinical research

Experience of working in Higher Education and/or within the health research sector (for example the NHS or commercial health research) would be advantageous, but is not essential.

We offer excellent training and ongoing professional development to support you in developing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in this role.

    Why Join Us?

    • Be part of a world‑class research‑intensive university committed to innovation and excellence in healthcare research and education.
    • Work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment that values integrity, collaboration and impact.
    • Access professional development opportunities and a supportive community of experienced colleagues.
    • Benefit from a flexible approach to working, a generous holiday allowance and access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension, along with a range of additional benefits.

The University of Southampton is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We select candidates based on merit and ability and are proud to support a diverse workforce. We particularly encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities.
