Based within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic portfolio, the Associate Director, Planning, Performance & Analytics will lead the University’s central planning, performance and analytics capability. Reporting to the Director, Performance and Enablement, you will provide stewardship of a specialist function and lead a small team that gives leaders trusted, consistent and decision-ready insight to support strategy, planning, performance monitoring and reporting.
You will set a clear and ambitious direction for the function by leading the ongoing evolution of the team’s capability and services, encouraging the thoughtful adoption of new technologies and analytical methods, and establishing the standards and ways of working needed to deliver high-quality analytics consistently and sustainably.
While the purpose of the role is clear, there is genuine scope for the successful candidate to help shape how it evolves in practice. Salary will be based on the skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours a week), based on our Hillcrest Campus.

Ko wai koe? – Who are you?
You are an experienced senior analytics or data science practitioner who can recognise and build on existing strengths while creating momentum for the future. You combine deep technical credibility with inclusive leadership and sound judgement. You have strong communication and influencing skills with demonstrated experience building trusted relationships and supporting others to succeed.
You hold a postgraduate qualification (Masters or equivalent) in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science or a closely related quantitative discipline, alongside extensive senior experience in a complex organisation. An equivalent combination of qualifications and experience at principal or senior practitioner level would also be considered.
You will bring:
Significant experience designing and deploying advanced analytics and data science solutions in a complex organisation.
Expertise in predictive modelling, machine learning, statistical inference, forecasting, and contemporary analytics tools including Python or R, SQL and data visualisation platforms such as Power BI or Tableau.
Experience translating complex organisational challenges into clear analytical questions, robust analysis and practical recommendations.
A track record of developing analytics products that are visually effective, actively used and designed for ongoing operational value.
Experience leading, coaching or technically mentoring analysts or data scientists and developing shared professional standards.
A strong understanding of data governance, privacy, security and the responsible use of data and AI.
A demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and mātauranga Māori, with the ability to apply this in leadership and decision-making to support meaningful partnership and equitable outcomes.
Experience in tertiary education, the wider public sector, cloud-based analytics platforms, modern data infrastructure or MLOPs would be advantageous.

We partner across the institution to support evidence-informed planning, performance management, statutory reporting and strategic decision-making.
We design and maintain trusted reporting and dashboard products, deliver timely analysis on the questions that matter most, and build contemporary data science practice that is robust, well-governed and fit for operational use. Working closely with leaders, IT and data governance partners, we help translate complex challenges into clear analytical questions
